Aspen Meadow Band: "It Still Amazes Me"

Limelight Hotel , 355 S. Monarch St., Aspen, CO 81611

Aspen Meadow Band invites you to a special evening of music that celebrates the wonder and fascination that John Denver had for other musicians and musical avenues to benefit Aspen Camp of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Aspen Camp is the premier outdoor camp for the Deaf Community* in the nation and is celebrating 50 years of programs that inspire, empower, and educate all those who participate. This January they were awarded Non-Profit of the Year by Aspen Chamber Resort Association.

In the 1960s, with the help of Jimmy Buffet and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John established the Deaf Camp Picnic to support Aspen Camp. He was amazed by the things they were doing with the Deaf Community. John always saw the value in each person he met and the positive contribution they could make to the world.

"What we need are more ways to experience our interconnectedness—it is a precursor to deep love . . . Let us no longer struggle. Let us ever become who we most want to be. As we begin to be who we truly are, the world will be a better place," John once said. Also, "I would so much like young people to have a sense of the gift that they are. Not many of them feel like that."

As reflected in this statement from their website, that is what Aspen Camp seeks to achieve: "The purpose of the AC is to develop and motivate a sense of self-confidence, independence, and pride in personal accomplishments; to develop self-reliance; to encourage a network of sharing with others, and to recognize each individual’s abilities as a participating member of society."

For this show, we have selected a mix of John Denver classics and songs by other artists that John was amazed by, performed with, and covered that express his wonderment with life, love of nature, helping others, and fun! These songs reflect not only John's values but some of the core values of Aspen Camp that resonated with John.

"We are a family that believes in innovation, responsibility, and adventure as ways to better our community and ourselves . . . We are proud to be the only camp that provides year-round programs to Deaf* youth, adults, and families as well as hearing allies. Our goal is to help you explore the great outdoors and the great within. Our programs are enriching, community-based, and contribute to your sense of adventure." —Aspen Camp website

Aspen Camp relies on the support of the local community. 72% of campers need scholarships, which are made available through donations. We are excited to have representatives from Aspen Camp at the show for you to make a donation to if you feel so led.

"Like we said, we believe in the power of community. So we love seeing our locals and hearing fans involved through the services we provide such as ASL classes, leadership and cultural training, and more." —Aspen Camp website

Our desire for this show is that you would be uplifted and brought back to the good times you experienced listening to the songs we've included, that you might be able to join in with us as we share in John's joy and fascination for some pretty incredible musicians, and to celebrate 50 years of Aspen Camp.

"Music does bring people together. It allows us to experience the same emotions. People everywhere are the same in spirit. No matter what language we speak, what color we are, the form of our politics or the expression of our love and our faith, music proves: We are the same." —John Denver

From Ron Matthews:

When: Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 -- 4-6 pm Where: Mountain Chalet, 5th floor Who: Ron Matthews and YOU!

Oh, how I love to sing and play the music of John Denver! Please make plans now to join me in Aspen for a fun and relaxing concert sharing John Denver's music! I'll be playing a 2 hour acoustic set sharing some of my -- and your -- favorite songs. Come ready to sing along!

Fans and friends who have been to my shows know I like to put together setlists that are a bit unusual -- I prefer to perform songs that are seldom played or seldom heard in a live setting. This year's songs will include:

-- The Garden Song -- Flight (The Higher We Fly) -- We Don't Live Here No More -- A Song for All Lovers -- Take Me Home, Country Roads (anyone familiar with that one? lol)

I hope you'll set aside an extra $20 bill so you can attend my show! I'd love to help make your visit in Aspen a most pleasant and memorable experience, as we enjoy together some of the best acoustic music ever written -- the music of John Denver!

Almost all of us here have memories of hearing John live, whether in a concert setting, making a speech at one of his many symposiums, or in an intimate conversation as a friend. For 20 years now, John’s voice has been silent from saying anything new, but we would like to invite you to join us in listening to John share about moments in his life interspersed with the songs those experiences inspired him to write. “In John’s Own Words” promises to be a time of remembrance, reflection, and recalling the impact he had on us all. We invite you to join us for this special concert and sincerely hope to see you there.
